New City Market – ตลาดเมืองใหม่ (Talat Mueang Mai), Chiang Mai
This is the largest market for groceries in the City where you can shop at reasonable and low prices.
Since the turnover of goods is always very high, you can rely on fresh foods such as vegetables, fruits, eggs and fish. The market is open everyday, holidays included, and the range of goods is particularly rich from the early morning to the early afternoon.
Listed on Google Maps as "Muang Mai Market", the market area actually extends from ถนน วิชยานนท์ (Wichayanon Rd.) in the south (where the American Consulate-General is located) to ซอย วังสิงห์คำ 1 (Wang Sing Kham Soi 1, or "Wang Sing Kham 1 Alley" on Google Maps) in the north, and from ถนน วังสิงห์คำ (Wang Sing Kham Rd.), the road along Ping River, in the east, to ถนน เมืองสมุทร (Mueang Samut Rd., or "Muang Samut Rd." in Google Maps) in the west. In addition, there are numerous grocery shops and other shops around this market area.
Car parking spaces are rare, but you can always find a parking space for your motorbike.
This area is almost exclusively visited by Thai people, often restaurant owners buy there, and you might see a few expatriates within the market area, and a few tourists occasionally and only on the street along Ping River.
Visiting the market on foot is best if you start from Chinatown from the south, walking on the street along Ping River. When you see the Khao Chedi (เจดีย์ขาว, or "Khao Cetiya" on Google Maps), then you arrived at the south-eastern corner of the market area.
Visiting the market by car or motorbike is best if you approach either from ถนน ราชวงศ์ (Ratchawong Rd.) from the south, or from ถนน วังสิงห์คำ (Wang Sing Kham Rd.), the road along Ping River, from the north.
